The Cluster of Excellence ‘Cross-Cultural Philology’ researches 5000 years of cultural heritage from multiple perspectives, across cultures, and with a solid historical foundation, all while showing the enormous relevance of philology to the present day.
The Cluster is an interdisciplinary research network drawing together 25 departments at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich and one at Julius-Maximilian-University in Würzburg, which act in cooperation with a large number of national and international partners.
Its five research areas investigate how and by whom philological knowledge has been passed down over millennia and across the globe, with ongoing projects devoted to topics such as editorial practice, questions of canon formation and censorship, as well as the annotation, archiving, movement, and translation of texts.
The cluster is amongst the most important humanities projects supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).
The opening ceremony will showcase the cluster’s future work to a wide audience – in an engaging way, with music and a reception afterwards. Everyone is welcome! Admission is free.
